    As a physical constant the refractive index is valuable for distinguishing between plastics. By measuring the refractive index it is often possible to save tedious analytical work as the refractive index provides essential indications of the composition of a plastic, particularly if the test is carried out on polymeric and on cracked or depolymerized material.
