This standard is included in DIN Handbook 479. The test method specified serves to determine the resilience of elastomers having a Shore A or IRHD hardness of between 30 and 85 (see DIN 53519 Part 1) when subjected to impact. This method is particularly suitable for making a rough assessment of the dynamic behaviour of elastomers using simple equipment. When elastomers are deformed, they absorb energy which is partly returned when the elastomer returns to its original shape. That part of the energy that is not returned as mechanical energy is dissipated as heat in the elastomer.
