The compression test can be used to characterize the hardness of profiles, not less than 3 mm thick, made of flexible cellular materials. The compression under a defined test force acting perpendicular to the profile axis and the test force (deformation force) required to deform a profile to a defined size are measures of the compressibility of the material. Test pieces taken from a moulding by agreement can also be used for testing provided the thickness of the test piece is uniform. Results of measurements obtained on samples of different shape or under different test conditions are not comparable and do not allow a correlation to be made to material characteristics obtained from tests carried out on test pieces as specified in DIN 53576 and DIN 53577 or on other test pieces.
