Tear growth tests serve to determine the resistance of a textile fabric to tear growth along cuts previously made in it for that purpose. The tear growth test is applicable to single-ply fabrics and to laminated or bonded multi-ply fabrics in which the tear propagates approximately parallel to the thread, and in the same direction as the original cut. To ensure that tear growth proceeds approximately parallel to the thread, the test may also be carried out with the aid of a clamping frame to hold the cross threads under slight tension.
