Specifies a method of ultrasonic examination of fusion welded joints in metallic materials which exhibit a relatively low ultrasonic attenuation (especially that due to scatter); the test objects shall have a minimum thickness of 10 mm and a plane or curved surface. It mainly applied to welded joints with a full penetration weld. Where the values specified are a function of the material, they are based on a sound velocity in steel of (5920 + 30) m/s for longitudinal waves and (3255 + 15) m/s for transverse waves. This shall be taken into account when examining materials in which the sound propagation has a different velocity.
