Diese Norm legt die Hüllmasse und die Eigenschaften von Drehverschlusszapfen für strukturelle Anwendung für den Temperaturbereich von - 55 bis 150 grad C fest. Einzelheiten, wie z. B. das Verriegelungsprinzip und die Sicherung, können je nach Hersteller unterschiedlich sein und sind deshalb in der Norm nicht definiert. Der Kennbuchstabe für das Drehverschlusssystem beschreibt - unabhängig vom Hersteller - die wichtigsten Merkmale des Verschlusses. Teile nach DIN 65 487 und DIN 65 492 bzw. DIN 65 493 dürfen nur miteinander gepaart werden, wenn sie mit dem gleichen Kennbuchstaben für das Drehverschlusssystem und gleichem Herstellerkennzeichen gekennzeichnet sind.
