Die Norm legt die derzeit gebräuchlichen und am häufigsten angewandten Aufzeichnungsverfahren zur Speicherung analoger Messwerte auf Magnetband fest. Sie umfasst die Verfahren mit Direktaufzeichnung und Frequenzmodulation. Durch die Festlegung dieser Verfahren soll der Austausch von Messwertaufzeichnungen auf Magnetband über Geräte verschiedener Hersteller ermöglicht werden. Dieser Austausch erfordert darüber hinaus noch weitere Angaben, die in besonderen Normen festgelegt werden.
