A Withdrawn Standard is one, which is removed from sale, and its unique number can no longer be used. The Standard can be withdrawn and not replaced, or it can be withdrawn and replaced by a Standard with a different number.

The ISO Recommendations ISO/R 286 - 1962 contains a large number of tolerance zones in common use. These tolerance zones were taken over, with certain curtailments and additions, into DIN 7160, ISO allowances for external dimensions (shafts) for nominal sizes from 1 to 500 mm and into DIN 7161, ISO allowances for internal dimensions (holes) for nominal sizes from 1 to 500 mm. The unlimited combining of these tolerances zones would give rise to a very large number of fits. Economic manufacture, however, demands drastic limitation of the number of tolerance zones the combinations of which lead to universally applicable and recommended fits.
