Diese Norm legt ein Prüfverfahren für digitale Lichtwellenleiter-Kommunikationssysteme fest. Dieses Prüfverfahren verfolgt einerseits die Absicht, die minimal erforderliche und maximal zulässige optische Leistung am Eingang des Steckverbinders eines Lichtwellenleitersystems zu messen, der mit einem festgelegten Bitfehlerverhältnis (BER) betrieben wird. Andererseits wird beabsichtigt, das zugesicherte Fehler-Betriebsverhalten nachzuweisen, welches bei den kleinsten und den grössten optischen Leistungen erhalten wird, die der Hersteller der Verbindungseinrichtungen festgelegt hat.
