Proposes requirements for self-contained, portable, electrically-heated sterilizers that have an integral water storage, generate saturated steam at selected temperatures up to 134 degrees Celsius within the sterilizing chamber by an electrical heating unit, and displace air by downward displacement. These sterilizers are intended for use in hospitals, dental surgeries, medical surgeries and similar locations, generally for the sterilization of unwrapped instruments, utensils and small volume containers of fluids. They are not suitable for the sterilization of wrapped instruments and porous loads, unless a drying stage is provided. They are not intended for the sterilization of large volumes of fluid or the decontamination of laboratory waste. Guidance about information that should be supplied with enquiries and orders, limitations of use, and quality of feed water for steam generation is given in Appendices.
