Das DVGW-Arbeitsblatt wurde erstmalig bereits 1984 veröffentlicht und beschreibt ein praxisnahes Verfahren zur Ermittlung des mikrobiologischen Verhaltens von trinkwasserberührten Werkstoffen. Das Verfahren wurde zwischenzeitlich vom PK Mikrobielles Wachstum auf Werkstoffen des GTK 1.3 Wassergüte überarbeitet und nach Abstimmung in den DVGW-Gremien als Entwurf des DVGW W 270 zur sofortigen Anwendung freigegeben.
