Provides Bellcore's early preliminary view of generic criteria for Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network ISDN (BISDN) Transport Network Elements (NEs). The preliminary criteria described herein apply to the various BISDN NEs, i.e., the Remote Multiplexer Network Element (RMNE), the Access Network Element (ANE), and the Virtual Path Cross Connect (VPX). Additionally, Interworking Units (IWUs) are described for interworking DS1, DS3 and Switched Multi Megabit Data Service (SMDS) with BISDN.
