Provides Bellcore's view of proposed generic requirements for incorporating Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) functionality into Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) Digital Cross-Connect Systems (DCS). It provides a general DCS overview, introduces the SONET DCS with ATM functionality at three levels of complexity, discusses transport and operations functionality and presents applications and requirements for this new network element.
