Document gives Bellcore's view of proposed generic criteria for fast ATM layer protection switching mechanisms. Protection Switching (PS) mechanisms exist for Synchronous Optical Network (SONET)/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) layers. Mechanisms include protection switching based on linear or ring protection schemes. Dedicated ATM layer protection mechanisms adopt from the concepts and principles that are currently used by the SONET/SDH protection mechanisms. Criteria defined in this GR are based on current agreements for the ATM protection switching mechanisms adopted at both the ANSI and ITU-T standards bodies, plus relevant enhancements. The ATM protection switching mechanism applies to the VP Group and VP layer protection domains. Criteria for the ATM PS mechanism and OAM are provided.
