ISA-TR84.00.08-2017, Guidance for Application of Wireless Sensor Technology to Non-SIS Independent Protection Layers, provides guidance on the application of wireless sensor technology in non-safety instrumented system (non-SIS) independent protection layers (IPLs) with a risk reduction factor of 10 or less in the process industry. It excludes safety instrumented functions due to the complexities and uncertainties inherent in wireless communication for high-risk applications. This technical report covers design considerations such as network topology, latency, availability, security threats and countermeasures, commissioning, testing, operations, maintenance and management of change (MoC) specific to wireless sensor networks used for safety controls, alarms and interlocks (SCAI). ISA-TR84.00.08 emphasizes dependability, auditability and robust security measures including encryption, authentication and defense against radio interference. Key performance indicators (KPIs) are detailed for monitoring network health and reliability.
