Gives guidance for the design and assessment of structure for conventional steel displacement type surface ships in U.S. Navy service. The scope of coverage applies primarily to the stages of design wherein the total ship structural configuration is developed, the hull material is selected, critical hull loads are determined, load paths are identified, stress levels are evaluated, and the basic hull scantlings are selected.

This handbook provides guidance for the design and assessment of structure for conventional steel displacement type surface ships in U.S. Navy service. The scope of coverage applies primarily to the stages of design wherein the total ship structural configuration is developed, the hull material is selected, critical hull loads are determined, load paths are identified, stress levels are evaluated, and the basic hull scantlings are selected. Specific requirements for detailed design, and post construction maintenance and repair of hull structure are not addressed. This handbook is for guidance only and cannot be cited as a requirement.
