This standard defines mandatory requirements applicable to satellite communications (SATCOM) terminals required to operate over 5- and 25-kHz channels in a demand-assigned multiple access (DAMA) mode. The format and content of the Notification Message and Directed Messages fields of each DAMA forward orderwire message (DFOW) and the DROW Message field of each DAMA return orderwire (DROW) is defined. Each specific directed message is hereinafter referred to as a DFOW: (Directed Message name) and each specific DROW message is referred to as a DROW: (message name). The protocols for the interchange of directed and DROW messages, to provide control of access to satellite resources, are also defined. This standard will be used in conjunction with MIL-STD-188-183, which defines the time slot size and location and burst format for each DFOW, DROW, and user-to-user communications (UCOM) burst and the protocols for ranging and FOW monitoring that terminals perform to operate over ultra-high frequency (UHF) SATCOM channels in the DAMA mode.
