Deze norm beschrijft een methode voor het bepalen van de berststerkte van papier en karton. De methode is toepasbaar op papier en karton met een berststerkte tot circa 1100 kPa. De methode is niet geschikt voor golfkarton en materiaal dat zeer rekbaar is in een of meer richtingen. Bij papier met een berststerkte lager dan 70 kPa, wordt de meting minder nauwkeurig; in dat geval moeten een aantal proefstukken op elkaar beproefd worden. Voor kartons met een berststerkte hoger dan 1100 kPa, voor golfkarton en eventueel voor papiersoorten toegepast in golfkarton dient NEN-ISO 2759 te worden gehanteerd.
