Deze norm beschrijft de voorbehandeling die een grondmonster moet ondergaan voordat dit geschikt is voor fysisch-chemische analyses. De norm beschrijft de volgende vijf aspecten van voorbehandeling van het monster; drogen, breken, zeven, monsterverdelen en malen. De norm is van toepassing op alle soorten grondmonsters, maar mag alleen worden uitgevoerd voor die fysisch-chemische analyses waarvan het resultaat door deze voorbehandeling niet wezenlijk wordt veranderd (zie de desbetreffende norm). Om deze reden is de norm niet van toepassing op grondmonsters, waarin gehalten aan vluchtige componenten moeten worden bepaald.
