La présente Norme européenne spécifie une méthode d'essai pour la résistance à la pénétration des gants de protection contre les produits chimiques et/ou les micro-organismes. Actuellement, on estime que les gants qui résistent à la pénétration, lorsqu'ils sont essayés selon cette partie de l'EN 374, constituent une barrière efficace contre les risques microbiologiques.
