La présente partie de l'ISO 12944 décrit les types de peinture et de systèmes de peinture les plus couramment utilisés pour la protection contre la corrosion des structures en acier. Elle constitue également un guide pour le choix de systèmes de peinture suivant l'environnement dans lesquels ils seront utilisés (voir ISO 12944-2), les qualités de préparation de surface (voir ISO 12944-4) et la durabilité prévisible (voir ISO 12944-1). La durabilité des systèmes de peinture est classée en termes de durabilité limitée, moyenne et haute.
