Le présent document spécifie des algorithmes de compression numérique utilisant les redondances temporelles et spatiales ainsi que les propriétés psychoacoustiques. Par rapport à la norme MPEG1 audio, ce document améliore les performances de restitutions pour des débits inférieurs à 64 kb/s. Par ailleurs, des spécifications sont fournies pour un système audio multivoies, compatible avec les systèmes de décodage stéréophoniques existants conformes à MPEG1.
