ÖNORM EN ISO 128-40 legt die allgemeinen Grundsätze für die Darstellung von Schnittansichten und Schnitten in allen Arten von technischen Zeichnungen (mechanische Technik, Elektrotechnik, Architektur, Tiefbau u. dgl.) in Orthogonalprojektion nach ISO 5456-2 fest. Die Darstellung der Schnittflächen erfolgte nach ISO 128-50. Die Anforderungen an die Reproduktion, einschliesslich Mikroverfilmung nach ISO 6428, wurden auch in dieser Norm berücksichtigt.
