Diese ÖVE/ÖNORM gilt für die Sicherheit elektrischer Waschmaschinen für den Hausgebrauch und ähnliche Zwecke, die zum Waschen von Kleidung und Textilien bestimmt sind, wobei die Bemessungsspannung nicht mehr als 250 V für Einphasengeräte und 480 V für andere Geräte beträgt. Nicht für den normalen Hausgebrauch bestimmte Geräte, die aber dennoch zu einer Gefahrenquelle für die Allgemeinheit werden können wie z. B. Geräte, die von Laien in Läden, für gewerbliche Zwecke und in der Landwirtschaft verwendet werden, fallen in den Anwendungsbereich dieser Norm. Beispiele für solche Geräte sind Waschmaschinen zur Gemeinschaftsbenutzung in Wohnblöcken oder Waschsalons.
