The Product Safety Framework Handbook is designed to enhance the safe supply, sale and use of products. It can be applied to any product including new and existing products, as well as product designs and prototypes. This Handbook provides a generic, hazards-based approach, rather than a product-specific approach. It addresses the risk sources most commonly associated with products, and establishes a set of performance requirements and assessment methods to manage these risks.Applying these principles early in the product development life-cycle will maximize benefits and eliminate many potential hazards. At each stage in the evolution of the product design it is necessary to reapply the safety principles, to confirm that later features do not interact with earlier features to cause a hazard. The assessments can be applied even where products are regulated by a mandatory Standard or guided by a voluntary Standard.
