Provides Bellcore's view of proposed generic requirements for a collection of objectives for the direct maintenance user interface of a switching system. The objectives provide design goals that address usability issues that are central to a typical BCC's concerns. That is, they deal with elements of the user interface that affect how easy it is to train a maintenance technician, how error free performance will be, how quickly tasks will be completed and how well the design lends itself to cross-training of technicians. Included is an appendix that provides a checklist together with a formal procedure for using it. The checklist contains items that correspond on a one for one basis to sections of the document that identify the objectives and is a tool to help in identifying potential problems in the design.
