Describes Bellcores view of the generic requirements for a local Stored Program Controlled Switch (SPCS). SPCS is capable of offering data link layer (Layer 2) user access to an ISDN on the D-Channel of a Basic or Primary rate interface. Each ISDN exchange access interface requires a D-Channel on which SPCS gives priority to voice and data call control signaling. The SPCS D-Channel is functionally organized into layers, consisting of the physical layer (Layer 1), the data link layer (Layer 2), and the network layer (Layer 3). This document focuses on generic SPCS requirements for the D-Channel and Layer 2 only.
