This standard defines the quality of ceramic tiling. The objective is to establish the general rules and processes in relation to the selection of materials, preparation, installation, delivering and maintenance of ceramic tile systems which need to be considered in order to guarantee its quality and durability as well as its technical and aesthetical performances. This standard is applicable to ceramic tiles installed with bonding materials to all types of appropriate backgrounds. This includes the installation of ceramic tiles to vertical and horizontal backgrounds, in interiors and exteriors, as well as in residential and public buildings. This standard provides de installation rules for all types of ceramic tiles commercialised in the market, that is, those products which meet all the requirements of EN 14411 as well as those products which comply with the CE marking but which do not necessarily comply with all of the voluntary requirements set out in EN 14411 for their given group. For these last tiles, this document provides specific conditions in relation to their installation and/or delivery.Furthermore, this standard includes specific considerations for those types of adhesives included in EN 12004 Annex ZA but which are only used for interiors. Ceramic tiling with these types of bonding materials, as indicated by the corresponding standard, shall be exclusively used under the conditions established in EN 12004 in order to guarantee its safety and performance. Likewise, this standard makes special considerations for those ceramic tiling bonded with cement mortar. These materials traditionally used for installation are adequate only for some specific types of ceramic tiles, thus this document establishes the limitations in relation to the selection of these materials so that they are safely used. This standard does not cover any products other than ceramic tiles like natural stone, cement tiles, etc. Furthermore, it does not cover those tiling carried out with ceramic tiles but installed by mechanical means with no bonding materials as included in EN 12004, like ventilated facades, elevated pavements.
