This part of ISO 9917 specifies requirements and test methods for dental cements w hich are water-based inwhich setting is achieved by a combination of an acid-base reaction and polymerization. The materials areintended for luting, base or lining, restoration, tooth core build up, and pit and fissure sealing purposesEXAMPLE Conventional glass polyalkenoate cements are normally formed by reacting an ion-leachablealuminos ilicate glass w ith a polyalkenoic acid in an aqueous environment. Materials that fall w ithin the scope of this part ofISO 9917 w ill normally be able to effect setting by such an aqueous acid-base type reaction but in addition w ill be able toundergo setting by polymerization.NOTE Attention of manufacturers and test laboratories is draw n to the closely-related International StandardsISO 4049 and ISO 9917-1.
