Per invecchiamento si intende il fenomeno che provoca la variazione delle proprietà dell'acciaio in funzione del tempo. Si definisce naturale l'invecchiamento spontaneo a temperatura ambiente, artificiale l'invecchiamento accelerato provocato da un innalzamento della temperatura. In particolare, nella norma, l'invecchiamento è considerato il fenomeno che provoca, dopo deformazione a temperatura ambiente, la variazione delle caratteristiche dell'acciaio in funzione del tempo. La variazione è riferita alle caratteristiche dell'acciaio appena deformato.
