La specifica tecnica definisce un sistema di identificazione automatica delle unità di carico (AEI - Automatic Equipment Identification) basato su tecnologie in radio frequenza. Questo sistema è inteso per applicazioni generali nel settore della telematica per il traffico ed il trasporto stradale (RTTT/TICS Road Transport Traffic Telematics/Transport information and control systems). Esso consente il trasferimento dei codici di identificazione ed altre informazioni relative alle unità di carico ed ai veicoli usati nel trasporto intermodale in ambito RTTT/TICS e nei sistemi informativi relativi ai processi di trasporto intermodale.
