La norma descrive i metodi di preparazione delle provette di materie plastiche, termoplastiche e termoindurenti, per mezzo di lavorazione meccanica. Sono descritti i principali tipi di macchine adatte a tale scopo, con i particolari geometrici degli utensili di fresatura, di tranciatura e di intaglio e i parametri di lavorazione (velocità di avanzamento e di taglio ed altre condizioni particolari).
