La norma definisce la registrazione univoca di profili JPEG e SPIFF, notazioni SPIFF, spazi con colori SPIFF, segnalibri per applicazioni specifiche, tipi e immagini di compressione SPIFF e Autorità di registrazione definiti dalla CCITT T81-ISO/IEC 10918-1, ITU-T T84-ISO/IEC 10918-3. La ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 29 delegherà ad un'Autorità designata il compito di raccogliere, studiare, approvare, registrare e diffondere le informazioni atte a personalizzare le norme JPEG.
