Abstract - (Show below) - (Hide below)

Provides basic information on the selection of electrical apparatus, and its installation, alteration and maintenance to ensure safe use in areas where combustible materials are generated, prepared, processed, handled, stored or otherwise used, and which are therefore potentially hazardous. It supplements the requirements of Section 9 of AS 3000-SAA Wiring Rules.

Scope - (Show below) - (Hide below)

This Part of the code offers guidance on the selection of electrical apparatus and associated equipment, and on its installation, alteration and maintenance to ensure safe use in areas where combustible materials are generated, prepared, processed, handled, stored or otherwise used, and which are therefore potentially hazardous. The term 'combustible material' (see Rule 1.3.1) includes gases, vapours, liquids, mists, solids and dusts, but does not include those materials which are inherently explosive. The latter may require special considerations which are beyond the scope of the code. The recommendations of the code do not apply to the underground mining industry for which other precautions are necessary. It is recognised, however, that the recommendations of the code may be applied to certain parts of the surface mining industries.Precautions which may be necessary against the effects of static electricity and against lightning are also outside the scope of this code, except for the general recommendations indicated in Rules 1.8 and 1.9.
