In this Part I, which is the main section of the standard, are listed the standard trade common names of some 398 species or groups of species of timbers which are imported into Australia or are likely to be of interest in the future. The names are in alphabetical sequence, based on the noun in the common name, e.g. Douglas fir is listed as fir, Douglas. Alongside each name, the botanical name or names and the authors of such names are given, together with the country or countries of supply and any other common names that have been used. The index number shown in the left-hand column facilitates reference from Part II, Alphabetical Index of All Names, to where those names are used in Part I.In the third column, headed "Classification", the letter "H" indicates hardwoods; or more specifically, the timbers of the botanical group Dicotyledons, not all of which are hard wood. The letter "S" indicates the softwoods or timber of the botanical group Gymnosperms, most of which are conifers.
