Specifies requirements for nickel or nickel plus chromium coatings on iron, steel, zinc alloy, copper or other alloy, and aluminium or aluminium alloy. It also provides for coatings incorporating a copper undercoat, and for use of gold, copper, brass or other metals plated over nickel. Microporous chromium coatings are also included. It does not apply to coatings on screw threads. For nickel plus chromium, four service condition numbers according to severity are provided and the coating classification, including thickness, is given for each number and each basis metal; for nickel alone or with topcoats other than chromium, three application grades according to severity are provided. Tests are cross-referenced to AS 2331.

This standard specifies requirements for electroplated coatings of nickel and nickel plus chromium on steel or iron, zinc alloy, copper or copper alloy, aluminium or aluminium alloy. It also specifies requirements for coatings of nickel-iron alloys containing a maximum iron content of 25 percent, and coatings incorporating a copper undercoat. It does not preclude the use of gold, copper, brass or other metals plated over nickel. This standard does not apply to the following: (a) Coatings applied to screw threads (with tolerances).(b) Coatings applied to sheet, strip or wire in the unfabricated form, or to coil springs.(c) Coatings applied as an undercoat to hard chromium coatings for engineering applications.* (d) Coatings applied to plastics.NOTE: Supplementary information to be supplied with the enquiry or order is given in Appendix A.
