Specifies requirements, additional to those in AS 1418.1, for tower cranes of the ram luffing, rope luffing, saddle jib (hammerhead), articulated saddle jib, and self-erecting types. Application, design, controls and indicating devices, equipment, operation, access, marking, and inspection and testing are covered. Appendices provide guidance on information to be supplied with an enquiry or order, and by the manufacturer, statutory approval, typical group classifications of the crane and its mechanisms, maintenance, and typical illustrations of tower cranes.

The Standard sets out requirements for power-driven tower cranes which are dismantled when they have served their purpose and tower cranes of the permanently erected type and as defined in AS 2549. Both horizontal jib and luffing jib and boom cranes are included, and the cranes may be of the travelling, fixed, or climbing type. Power-driven mobile cranes fitted with tower attachments are excluded.The Standard covers requirements from and including the hook to the anchorages of the tower crane as well as requirements for rail-mounted types.NOTES:1. Guidance on information to be supplied with an enquiry or order is given in Appendix A.2. Guidance on information to be supplied by the manufacturer is given in Appendix B.3. Guidance on statutory approval is given in Appendix C.4. Guidance on selection and operation of tower cranes is given in AS 2550.
