Abstract - (Show below) - (Hide below)

Specifies the essential environmental, operational and radiofrequency requirements for 406 MHz distress beacons for land and maritime use and the methods of test for their verification. These specifications are provided for distress beacons intended for use with the 406 MHz COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system. It also provides marking and registration details as well as a guide for the procurement of COSPAS-SARSAT documentation.

Scope - (Show below) - (Hide below)

This Standard provides the minimum requirements for Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) and Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) operating with a carrier frequency of 406.025 MHz.These requirements encompass the physical characteristics of the devices, as pertain to maritime and land use, and the performance characteristics for reception through the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system.Characteristics are also included for the homing transmitters incorporated in these devices. This Standard does not apply to the Emergency Locating Transmitters (ELTs) used in aeronautical applications.
