Gives two methods for measuring exhaust gas smoke characteristics of reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines operating under steady-state conditions, either by evaluating smoke opacity by measurement of the obscuration of a light beam, or by evaluating the soot content by measurement of the blackening of a filter.
