This Handbook provides guidelines for road safety audits intended to be conducted either during the design or the construction phase of a new road or traffic management treatment, or as part of the management process for existing roads. It provides, firstly, a background to road safety audit which includes an explanation of the process, its aims and objectives and its relationship to quality management and legal issues. The main thrust of the document is a complete set of detailed procedures for the conduct of an audit, together with case studies and check lists covering a variety of audit situations. This is a joint publication with Austroads.
