ISA-TR84.00.05-2009, Guidance on the Identification of Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) in Burner Management Systems (BMS), provides guidance on identifying SIFs within BMSs for fired equipment, including boilers, process heaters, thermal oxidizers, oil heater treaters and glycol reboilers. It supplements ANSI/ISA-84.00.01 (updated to ANSI/ISA-61511-1 and ANSI/ISA-61511-2) by illustrating the application of hazard and risk analysis to BMS functions to determine safety requirements and safety integrity levels (SILs). It includes detailed hazard analysis examples for various types of fired equipment and discusses the safety lifecycle, protection concepts, operating modes, typical hazardous events and corresponding safety actions such as fuel trips and permissives. ISA-TR84.00.05 also emphasizes that, while it offers illustrative methodologies and example system configurations, actual designs must consider site-specific conditions and applicable codes, such as NFPA 85, API RP 556 and API RP 14C. ISA-TR84.00.05 also addresses SIL verification processes, design considerations and highlights the importance of integrating sound engineering practices with functional safety standards to maintain safe operation and reduce risk in BMSs.
