This standard specifies requirements for traffic hazard warning lamps, as defined in Clause 1.4.1. It provides for low-intensity warning lamps for use at night, and for high-intensity warning lamps for daytime use.It specifies requirements relating to the intensity, distribution and colour of the light emitted from traffic hazard warning lamps to ensure that they will provide an effective warning signal under the conditions which may reasonably be expected in normal use. It also requires provision of retroreflectors to maintain a degree of warning in the event of an in-service failure of a warning lamp. The standard does not apply to warning lamps which are designed for use on road vehicles, nor does it apply to light signals which are intended for traffic control purposes. It does not specify the manner in which warning lamps are to be used (number to be used, placement, etc) for which reference should be made to AS 1742, Part 1 and Part 2, and to the relevant regulations of road and traffic authorities.NOTE: The manner in which the warning lamps are used will ultimately determine the effectiveness of the warning which they will provide to the road user (see Foreword).
