Specifies requirements for single-component, general purpose priming paints used for the protection of iron and steel against atmospheric conditions.

This Standard sets out requirements for single-component, general purpose priming paints for the protection of iron and steel against atmospheric corrosion. The primers are intended to be applied by brush and roller or by spray. The Standard deals with primers that are surface-dry within 6 h, and may be overcoated after 16 h.The primer is intended as a first coat on steel, under alkyd topcoats such as Types 17, 19 and 20 paints, and water-borne topcoats such as Type 21 paint, as specified in AS 2312.NOTES:1 Solvent-borne primers as described in this Standard comply with the requirements of Types 4 and 5 paint, in accordance with AS 2312.2 Appendix A provides recommendations on information which should be provided by the purchaser at the time of enquiry or order.3 Additional information on the use and application of steel primers is given in Appendix B.4 Alternative means for determining compliance with this Standard are given in Appendix C.
