ANSI/ISA-TR12.13.03-2009, Guide for Combustible Gas Detection as a Method of Protection, focuses on using combustible gas detection systems as a safety measure in industrial environments where flammable gases or vapors might accumulate. This technical report explains how these detection systems can help monitor and control hazardous atmospheres by alerting personnel to dangerous gas levels, triggering alarms, increasing ventilation or shutting down equipment to reduce the risks of fire or explosion. It covers different types of installations, such as fixed, portable and transportable, and provides detailed criteria for sensor placement, system design, maintenance, alarm response and operations. Additionally, this report discusses the use of electrical equipment in classified locations, supporting Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) hot work permits and supplementing ventilation strategies to reduce fire and explosion risks.
