Provides guidance on cabling practices to meet the requirements of AS/NZS 3080 and relevant AUSTEL/ACA Standards. It focuses on the use of Category 5 unshielded twisted pair and multimode optical fibre cabling, together with recommended connecting hardware. It applies primarily to the cabling of buildings for organizations that are office oriented, but would also be of assistance in small office/home office, industrial and commercial installations, which are covered by AS/NZS 3086. It supplements the information in AS/NZS 3080 and AS/NZS 3086 with explanatory material, practical details and generally useful information to assist installers and others in the field.

International Standard ISO/IEC 11801 specifies generic cabling for use within commercial premises which may comprise single buildings or multiple buildings (on a campus). The Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 3080 incorporates ISO/IEC 11801, with amendments where appropriate. The Austel Technical Standard TS 009 defines the wiring rules for customer premises cabling locations, equipment and hazards. This Handbook provides cablers with a 'field' document to allow them to cable premises for voice, data, image, video, and similar, guiding them through appropriate standard requirements with cross references to the actual Standards, should that become necessary for clarification.
