Diese ÖVE/ÖNORM gilt für Differenzstrom- Überwachungsgeräte für Hausinstallationen und ähnliche Verwendungen mit einer Bemessungsspannung, die 440 V AC nicht überschreiten darf, und einem Bemessungsstrom, der 125 A nicht überschreiten darf. Aufgabe dieser Geräte ist es, den Differenzstrom des Stromkreises zu überwachen und ein Warnsignal zu geben, wenn der Differenzstrom zwischen einem spannungsführenden Teil und einem leitfähigen berührbaren Teil oder Erde einen festgelegten Wert überschreitet. Es ist nicht beabsichtigt, dass RCMs nach dieser Norm als Schutzgeräte eingesetzt werden. RCMs erfassen plötzlich auftretende oder langsam steigende Differenzwechselströme und pulsierende Differenzgleichströme (siehe 8.16). Diese Norm betrifft Überwachungsgeräte, die gleichzeitig die Funktionen der Erfassung des Differenzstromes, des Vergleichs des Wertes dieses Stromes mit dem Ansprechdifferenzstrom des Gerätes und der Auslösung des vorgeschriebenen Warnsignals durchführen, wenn der Differenzstrom diesen Wert überschreitet. RCMs mit eingebauten Batterien sind in dieser Norm nicht enthalten. Die Anforderungen dieser Norm beziehen sich auf normale Umgebungsbedingungen (siehe 7.1). Zusätzliche Anforderungen können für RCMs notwendig sein, die an Orten mit erschwerten Umgebungsbedingungen verwendet werden. Diese Norm gilt nicht für Isolations-Überwachungsgeräte (IMDs), die unter den Anwendungsbereich von IEC 61557-8 fallen.
